Sterling T. Smith Observation Tower

Climb nearly 75 feet above the Museum of the West and take in breathtaking 360° views of Grand Junction, the Colorado River, and the surrounding canyon country from the Sterling T. Smith Observation Tower.

This fully ADA-accessible tower invites visitors of all ages and abilities to gain a new perspective on the landscape that shaped the spirit of the West.

Enjoy panoramic views of the Grand Valley, Book Cliffs, Colorado National Monument, and beyond. Explore interpretive signs at the top, making this an interactive stop for school groups, families, and curious explorers.

Included with museum admission, the tower is a favorite for locals and visitors alike. Whether you're soaking in the scenery or learning about the land, the Observation Tower offers a one-of-a-kind experience you won’t want to miss for only $2/person.

In celebration of the Museums of Western Colorado’s 60th anniversary, 60 Years of Treasures & Traditions: Western Colorado’s Living Legacy brings together iconic objects from the museum’s collections with stories of the people, places, and moments that shaped the Grand Valley.

FAQs & Rules

Can I take photos in the museum?

Yes! Personal photography is welcome in most areas of the museum. We just ask that you turn off your flash and be respectful of other visitors. For commercial or professional shoots, please contact us in advance to arrange permission.

How long does it take to see the museum?

Most visitors spend 1 to 2 hours exploring the museum, but your visit may be shorter or longer depending on your interests. If you plan to take your time with the exhibits, enjoy the observation tower, or explore a traveling exhibition, we recommend setting aside a bit more time.

Is there a day when admission is free?

Yes! We offer free admission on the first Friday of most months, excluding select national holidays. Your visit includes access to all permanent exhibits, with just a small additional fee if you’d like to explore our current traveling exhibition.

Am I allowed to bring food into the exhibit hall?

To help us protect the artifacts and exhibits, food and drinks are not allowed in the exhibit halls. You’re welcome to enjoy snacks or meals in designated areas, including outdoor spaces and our lobby where available.
